About the state symbols

Flag - this is one of the main symbols of the state, personifying its sovereignty and identity. The term "flag" is derived from the Dutch word «vlag» .Flag is a cloth cord attached to a staff or set sizes and colors, usually with a picture on it of the emblem or logo. Since ancient times, the flag served as the union of the people of the country and its identification with a specific  state education.

The national flag of independent Kazakhstan was officially adopted in 1992. Its author is an artist Shaken Niyazbekov.

The national flag of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a rectangular cloth of sky-blue color with the image of the sun with rays in the center, under which is a soaring eagle (golden eagle). Flagstaff has a  vertical line with national ornament. Image of the sun, its rays, eagle and a national ornament are of gold color. The ratio of width to length  is 1: 2.

In the tradition of heraldry each color symbolizes a certain concept. So, sky blue color symbolizes honesty, loyalty and perfection. In addition, the sky-blue color has a deep symbolic meaning in Turkic culture. Ancient Turks had always revered the sky their god-father, and their sky-blue banner symbolized devotion to his father-grandparent. On the national flag of Kazakhstan it symbolizes sky, peace and prosperity, and monochrome background - the unity of our country.

Based on the heraldic canons, the sun symbolizes wealth and abundance, life and energy. Therefore, the rays of the sun on the flag of the country are in the form of grain - a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Image of the sun in the state attributes of Kazakhstan reaffirms its commitment to universal values and shows that the new young country is full of life-affirming energy and is open to all countries of the world for partnership and cooperation.

Image of an eagle (golden eagle) is one of the main heraldic attributes long been used in the arms and flags of many nations. This image is usually perceived as a symbol of power, insight and generosity. Soaring eagle in the sun represents the power of the state, its sovereignty and independence, the pursuit of high goals and sustainable future. It occupies a special place in the outlook of Eurasian nomads. He is associated   with such concepts as freedom and fidelity, sense of dignity and courage, strength and purity of thoughts. Stylized silhouette of golden eagle reflects aspiration of the young sovereign state to the heights of world civilization.

An important element of the national flag is located at its shaft vertical line with national ornament. Kazakh ornament is  a form of specific artistic perception of the world in strict accordance with the aesthetic tastes of the people. Representing the harmony of different shapes and lines, it is a means of expression, disclosure of the inner world of the people. National ornament along the flagstaff represents the culture and traditions of the people of Kazakhstan.

 The national emblem is one of the main symbols of the state. The term "coat of arms" is derived from the German word «erbe» (inheritance) and means hereditary distinctive sign - a combination of figures and objects, which are given symbolic meaning.

History shows that even the Bronze Age nomads who lived in the territory of modern Kazakhstan identified themselves with a special symbol - totem, graphic expression which later became the name "tamga". For the first time, the term began to be used in the Turkic Khanate.

The national emblem of the sovereign Kazakhstan was officially adopted in 1992. It was sponsored by well-known architects Zhandarbek Malibekov and Shot-Aman Ualikhanov.

The State Emblem of the Republic of Kazakhstan has the shape of a circle (wheel) - a symbol of life and eternity, which was used a special honor among the nomads of the Great Steppe.

The central heraldic element of the State Emblem is the image of shanyrak (an arched cross-shaped top of the Kazakh yurt) against a sky blue background which irradiates uyks (supports or bearings of the yurt) in the form of sunrays to all sides. On both right and left of shanyrak there are images of mythical winged quarter horses. At the top of Emblem there is a volumetric five-pointed star. There is also the inscription «QAZAQSTAN» at the bottom of the Emblem. The images of shanyrak, uyks, and mythical horses, as well as the inscriptions “Kazakhstan”, have the colour of gold..

Shanyrak  is the main part of the system-tent shaped like a dome of heaven and one of the key elements of the fabric of life in the traditional culture of Eurasian nomads. The State Emblem of the Republic of shanyrak image - a symbol of common home and unified homeland for all peoples living in the country. The stable development of Kazakhstan depends on the well-being of every citizen, as a strength and stability of shanyrak depends on the reliability of all its uykov (supports).

Mythical winged horses are ‘ tulpars’ in the state emblem is a key heraldic element. The image of a horse from immemorial time personifies such concepts  as courage, loyalty and strength. The wings symbolize a centuries-old dream of multinational people of Kazakhstan on building a strong and prosperous nation. They testify to the pure thoughts and aspiration to successive improvement and creative development. Gold wings of racers also resemble golden ears and represent the hard work of Kazakhs and material prosperity of the country.

In centuries past, the horns were widely used in religious rites of nomads as well as the tops of their fighting banners. Images of heavenly grace, of fertility and good luck in the military form of horns of various animals have always occupied a significant place in symbolic compositions of different peoples. Thus, the winged horse with a horn of plenty is an important typological image which has deep semantic and historical roots.

Another detail in the National Emblem is   five-pointed star. This symbol is used by mankind since ancient times and represents constant aspiration of people to the light of truth to all the sublime and eternal. Image of the star in the State Emblem reflects the desire of Kazakh people to create country open for cooperation and partnership with all the peoples of the world. Heart and embrace people of Kazakhstan are open to representatives of all five continents.

The main color used in the state emblem is  the color of gold, which serves as a symbol of wealth, justice and magnanimity. Also there is a flag color - sky blue, which harmonizes with the color of gold and symbolizes the sky, peace and prosperity.

Hymn  is one of the main symbols of the state. The term "national anthem" comes from the Greek word «gimneo» means "a solemn song." Anthem serves as an important sound symbolism of key importance for effective socio-political consolidation and ethno cultural identification of citizens.

In the history of independent Kazakhstan national anthem of the country was approved twice - in 1992 and in 2006.

After gaining a republic state sovereignty in 1992 a competition was announced to the music and lyrics of the anthem of Kazakhstan. According to the results of the contest it was decided to keep the musical version of the anthem of the Kazakh SSR. Thus, the authors of the music of the first Kazakhstan hymn were Mukan Tulebayev, Yevgeny Brusilovsky and Latif Hamidi. The team of authors represented by famous poets: Muszaphar Alimbaev, Kadyr  Myrzaliev, Tumanbai Moldagaliev and poet Zhadyra Daribaeva won in the competition for the best text.

 In order to promote the sound symbolism of the country a new national anthem was adopted in 2006. A  popular patriotic song "Menin Kazakhstanym”  had become his foundation.  It was written in 1956 by Shamshi Kaldayakov on verses of  Zhumeken Nazhimedenov. In order to give the song a high status of the national anthem and a solemn sound , Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev modified the original text. The Parliament of Kazakhstan at the joint session of 6 January 2006 amended the decree "On state symbols", and approved a new national anthem of the country.
